The wish that was a dream
A long time ago there was boy named kham, he was a happy person and liked to travel in the forest and look at nature. Every day he went into the forest where there was a clean river that was fresh and cool. It was also mushroom season and some days he would collect mushrooms for his village.
One day kham went walking in the forest to see a group of monkeys and other animals that were jumping between the trees. Later in the afternoon kham could not find his way back home. Kham became tired and appetite. He picked fruit to eat that he had eaten when he had traveled with his father in the forest before. As evening came Kham was still lost. When it got dark he began to cry because he was missing his parents and was afraid to be alone in the forest.
The next day, Kham tried to look for the way back home. Unfortunately, as he was looking he went further and further into the forest until he was more lost than when he started. When he had nothing left to do he began to cry for help. “Aoy my dad and mum! I don’t know the way back to home! Help me” he cried. Many wild animals heard him and came to see who was crying in the forest. Kham was very afraid that the wild animals would do bad things to him. He ran away quickly and shouted, “Help me please! A group of wild animals are coming to hurt me!” When the group of animals heard this they called to Kham. “Mr. Small, do not be afraid, we can help you. We do not want to hurt you, please come back. Mr. Small, there is no problem, please come back. If you don’t come back then we cannot help you to find your way home. The tiger said, “Come back and we will help you.”
When the deer heard that kham had stopped running he called the other animals. Kham was sitting under a big tree. The group of animals came and sat around him. “What happened to you? How did you get lost in the forest?” asked the tiger. Kham replied, “I like the thick forest and being at the tree where the monkeys jump. I like to see nature and watch all the animals of the forest. I went so far inside the forest that I could not find my way back home.” The animals held a meeting to find a way to help Mr. Small get back home to see his parents. In the discussion the tiger said, “All the people do is deforestation which is the place where we live. They do not think of the wild animals like us.” The monkey suggested, “Mr. Small is only a boy and he doesn’t know anything. We need to help this boy so that he can tell to the people in the village not to come and destroy the forest or hurt wild animals.” All the animals agreed. After the meeting the animals went to talk to Mr. Small and the tiger said” we will help you to get back home, however, we have a request.” “What request?” asked Kham “You must promise us that when you go back home you will tell to the villagers to stop cutting down trees and destroying the forest and also tell them not to hurt or hunt wild animals in this area. If you agree we will help you get back home now.” Kham replied” I agree because I love nature and the wild animals.”
After their dialog, the monkeys helped Mr. Small climb up a tree. When he was on top of the tree the monkeys pointed and said, “That is the people you must go to. Out of the forest, along the river then turn right. Keep walking straight and you will reach the village.” Kham came down from the big tree and ten started off back home. Kham’s parents had been crying non-stop for three days and three nights because they thought their son had died. The people of the village had been looking for him day and night. When Kham arrived back at his parent’s house they ran ove and hugged him with great happiness. The villagers came and performed the Basi ceremony for him. Happiness was all around the village. The next day, Kham talked to his parents, “If there were no wild animals, river, or fruits in that forest, you would never have seen me again. Is it possible for you, my parents, to tell the people of our village that we need to protect the forest? We must not cut down the trees and hunt wild animals. I ask you this because I made a promise with the animals that helped me.” Kham and his parents went in front of the village people and began talking to them. “If we do not protect the forest it will cause a big problem. If we continue to hunt the wild animals, and destroy the forest where animals live and get food, the wild animals will go away, the trees will die and the people of our village will find it hard to live in the future without nature. This is our family’s request, “Kham’s father stated.
People looked at each other, very confused. Kham continued, “If we do not change there will be many problems in the future.” The next day the people of the village came to see Kham and his parents at their house. One person stood in the middle of the group and said, “In the future the people of the village will do as kham has suggested. We will help to look after the forest and the animals that live there.” When they had finished the whole village sang songs of happiness. Then Kham heard someone shout, “Kham, Kham wake up! What happened to you?” Kham woke up with a start, then he knew he had been sleeping and dreaming.
The first thing, he thought was, “Oh, I wish my dream can come true. Everybody working together to protect nature would be a very good thing.”
