The Bear and the Clever Chipmunk
Long ago, a clever chipmunk named Sa Thou was good friends with a bear. They often did favors for each other. A party was planned in their village, the next day, even though the weather was not very sunny. The chipmunk was going to take his girlfriend to the party tomorrow.
Unfortunately, the bear came and asked the chipmunk to return an old favor. The bear said, “ I have important work for us to do in the rice fields tomorrow; you will have to miss the party. If you don’t come and help me tomorrow, you will owe me three days of work instead of one.”
After the bear said this, the clever chipmunk thought to himself, “I will go and work for the bear tomorrow, to resolve this old favor. However, I will also make a secret plan to get home in time to take my girlfriend to the party”
When they arrived in the rice fields the next morning, they worked until lunch, took a break and then continued to work a little bit more. All day, the chipmunk had been secretly making a plan to get back home early for the party. Soon after lunch, the chipmunk said to the bear: “Wait for me a moment! I am going to the bathroom because today I am not feeling so well.”After that, the chipmunk ran into the forest and stayed there quietly for a while. Then, he began to make sounds like a cicada, four or five times: DA DA DA DA DA
When the bear heard these sounds, he thought: “The cicada has sung! In a moment, it will be dark! In a moment, we will go home. But the chipmunk hasn’t come back yet”. Soon after, the chipmunk returned and said: “Did you hear the cicada sing? Should we stop working and go home? In a moment, it will be very dark! “And so, they both went back home. When the bear arrived at his house, he sat and thought and noticed the cloudy sky. Suddenly, the bear exclaimed: “The chipmunk tricked me! We stopped working too early. It isn’t dark yet!”
The next day, the bear went to work in the chipmunk’s rice field. The bear had been thinking of a plan to return back the deception to the chipmunk. When the chipmunk arrived, they both started working and the weather was as cloudy as the day before. They worked together until after lunchtime. After awhile, the bear said to the chipmunk: “I am going to defecate a moment and will be back soon.” He ran into the forest and tried to make the sounds of the cicada: “Lu Lu Lu Lu Lu”. But the sound of the bear was not right; it did not sound like the voice of a cicada because the bear’s lips were too big. So, the chipmunk realized that the bear was trying to return back the deception which he had made yester day. The chipmunk laughed to himself: “Aok, Aok, Aok ,Aok!” And then he called to the bear: “Careful, careful! A snake has gone into the forest!” After he said this, the clever chipmunk got a piece of wood and began to hit the ground: “Poup, Poup….” It sounded like he was running to hit a snake. The bear was afraid to stay in the forest. He shouts and said “Where is it? Where is it?” The chipmunk giggled loudly: “Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha…” and said to his friend: “You tricked me by making the sounds of a cicada, didn’t you?” The bear admitted that he had tricked the chipmunk and promised never to do it again. The bear and the chipmunk worked all day along. When they stopped to go home, the bear suggested that they gather fruit in the forest to give to his son and wife, and to give to the chipmunk’s girlfriend. The chipmunk wanted to eat the fruit now, but he was too lazy to get it himself. Looking for a way to get the fruit easily, he made a request of the bear: “I am very busy working right now. If you go to get a roll of banana leaves first, could you then take my bunch of fruit with you too?” The bear asked: “Where is it?” The clever chipmunk replied, “I put it on the rock near the river.” After the bear had left, the chipmunk secretly hurried to get to the rock first. When he arrived at the right place, he took a large banana leaf and rolled himself into it. Then he laid himself on the rock. When the bear arrived, he hurried to take the chipmunk’s bunch of fruit in a banana leaf roll. He put it in his bag next to his own roll of fruit. The bear didn’t know that the chipmunk was in the roll. When the chipmunk got into the bear’s bag he began to eat the bear’s fruit, until it was almost finished. After he had eaten most of the fruit, he was so full; the chipmunk fell asleep in the bag. When the bear arrived at home, he called his son to come and see him. He put his paw in the bag to look for the fruit to give his son; but there wasn’t any fruit! The bear’s paw touched the chipmunk and woke him up. The chipmunk realized that he had not done the right thing by the bear. Afraid that the bear would get angry with him, the chipmunk jumped out from the bag and ran into the forest. The bear saw the chipmunk had eaten all the fruit and shouted after the chipmunk: “Curse you, Sa Thou chipmunk, for doing this to me! It is your karma, Sa Thou, that if you go down the forest road you will fall into a trap. If you don’t die, people will shoot you and then the worms will eat your body! Die
After that, the bear never saw the chipmunk again and he lived with his child and wife in happiness.
